Big Game Week 6

The initial run of the PokerStars Big Game has come to an end, but more episodes are only a few weeks away. In Week 6 it was another case of a Loose Cannon failing to excite, but the big-name pros at the table more than making up for it. Not least poker’s enfant terrible, Phil Hellmuth. The world record bracelet holder rarely misses the opportunity for a blow-up when the cameras are in attendance and he didn’t disappoint this week. His verbal spats with Dani “Ansky” Stern rank with some of his best ever tilts. His antics are undoubtedly the most watchable of any of the best online poker sponsored players.

In the early going, the the cameras focussed on the Loose Cannon, Andre Capella. He proved to be a very tight player who wasn’t in the habit of creating exciting pots. Thankfully he only last a total of 88 hands. Like all Loose Cannons, he qualified by winning a free tournament on the PokerStars Download. The 76 year old did put up a fight in the early going, but the Mr Hellmuth soon put a stop to that. Holding J-J against the poker brat’s J-8, he saw a blank flop, followed by runner-runner eights. It was the kind of hand that would have had Phil enraged had he been on the other end of it. Perhaps the Poker Brat needs to spend more time with a hand converter.

Capella’s stack never recovered from this mauling. To be fair to the Loose Cannon, Lady Luck certainly wasn’t on his side. He needed some cold hard poker tells to help him out, but they weren’t forthcoming. His K-Q hit top pair on a board of K-6-4, as did Stern with K-10. His fate was sealed by a 10 on the turn and an all-in call, which resulted in Stern collected the entirety of Capella’s stack. They ran it twice but both times the Loose Cannon missed his outs. He’ll was sent on his way, back to grinding PokerStars Bonus Code offers.

Dani Stern was the big stack after all was said and done in Week 6, to the consternation of Phil Hellmuth. After losing with the best starting hand in a couple of big pots, Phil had enough and began trash-talking in his own inimitable style. A veteran of US poker sites chat wars, Dani wasn’t one to take it lying down and began firing back with both barrels. It didn’t last for the whole session, with Hellmuth offer to buy Stern a conciliatory bottle of Dom Perignon. To liven up proceedings in the final few hands, host Amanda Leatherman produced a pre-bought bottle of the pricey champagne for Hellmuth personally hand over. The duo appeared to end the confrontation on good terms.

Proprietor of Daniels Room Poker and PokerStars talisman Daniel Negreanu was also on hand to stoke the fires of Hellmuth’s tilt. He even provoked Phil to ask him, “What have you ever done in holdem?” to which to the witty Canadian replied, “not that much.” It should be noted that Negreanu has the second highest career winnings total in live tournaments in the history of the game.
